we’re ALL Devo!

May 25th, 2006 by martin

OK I got the Pete Terrace Boogaloo album through the post. I was worried it was one of the look-a-like reissues because it was dirt cheap and was in opened shrink wrap but it’s arrived and it’s original AND near mint! What’s more, it has some absolutely brilliant tracks on it. Many of the tracks are re-workings of ‘famous’ latin cuts, like El Pito (Joe Cuba), Bang Bang (ditto) etc. and they are done in a really swinging style with lots of hammond. It also appears to be live unless the applause has been dubbed on. Great stuff!

I also picked up an old VHS video of Devo - The men who make the music which I don’t think is available on Region 2 DVD and I don’t have a mult region DVD player - (this is my excuse for not having owned it sooner. I have one or two other Devo DVDs which are mainly their videos, and some clips of other bits of film in fact, as a slight aside - the collection ‘Devo- The complete truth about de-evolution’ includes their incredible version of Bob Dylan’s ‘It takes a worried man’ from the Neil Young written and directed movie ‘Human Highway’. This cut, and the video accompanying it, is simply incredible. I just had to mention that though I am digressing…..

Anyway, I love Devo, and the earlier the better and to say I was blown away by this video would be an understatement. It’s absolutely genius, and anyone who ‘gets’ DEVO, the real Devo, not the ‘whip it’ pop group, simply MUST go and get a copy right now if you haven’t already. I’m deeply ashamed that I’ve only just got it now. One word for it - genius. Absolutely essential viewing. I’m now off to try and find some more early live material as there seems to be quite a bit out there.

 OK spuds?
